As apart of my slow campaign to reduce hair algae on my little reef I am giving my tank a few days with the lights out. My thinking is that the main requirements for the algae are nutrients and light. Nutrients are reducing so I thought I would try a lights out period followed by a slightly shorter photoperiod, I think the corals will be Ok with this.

![]() Many thanks to Louis at Octopus8 Aquatics for an excellent link to a talk by Hunter Hammond on keeping Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus). I found the video both interesting and instructive. It can be found on You Tube He also recommends a very good book on Wrasse which I bought when setting up my aquarium and have found really useful; "Fairy and Rainbow Wrasses and their relatives" by Rudie H Kuiter. ![]() I have got a couple of scratches on the inside of the aquarium glass presumably when I have used the magfloat cleaner and have got sand on the pad. Occasionally they become visible when algae grows in them and this is not easy to get off. Saw one of the chaps in the LFS using a little pad to clean the glass and ended up buying one. Will see how it goes. I have had to take my poor iridis wrasse from the display and put him into the refugium. He is taking a real battering from the clowns. I am going away for a while and don't want to seriously disturb my tank until I return. Otherwise I would take out corals and rocks and get those pesky clowns out for good.

AuthorI have always enjoyed keeping fish and began this website when doing the research before setting up my own modest reef. I couldn't find this type of site so decided to make my own. Archives
